Making sense of too much data s
For my first time using Adobe Illustrator, I got a lot of practice using graphs in Illustrator. I did not include all of the facts from the Pew Study, as there were more than enough, but I chose ones that people around my age would find interesting. Many of the statistics I chose show that online dating is becoming more widely accepted and is growing, which was the overall finding in the study.
I did however choose to show that only about 22 percent of adults aged are online dating, and I chose to include how many of all of the online daters have had a bad experience with it. I think those two statistics were important to include to show the whole story.
Circos Stages Mesolithic to Neolithic Transition Bollongino et al. present evidence of a slow transition between Mesolithic hunter-gatherer groups to Neolithic farmers.. Previous theories that the foragers disappeared shortly after the arrival of farmers are at odds with palaeogenetic and isotopic data analysis from Neolithic human skeletons from the Blätterhöhle burial site in Germany.
A Global Database of Society Supported by Google Jigsaw , the GDELT Project monitors the world’s broadcast, print, and web news from nearly every corner of every country in over languages and identifies the people, locations, organizations, themes, sources, emotions, counts, quotes, images and events driving our global society every second of every day, creating a free open platform for computing on the entire world. GDELT monitors the world’s news media from nearly every corner of every country in print, broadcast, and web formats, in over languages, every moment of every day.
What would it look like to use massive computing power to see the world through others’ eyes, to break down language and access barriers, facilitate conversation between societies, and empower local populations with the information and insights they need to live safe and productive lives? By quantitatively codifying human society’s events, dreams and fears, can we map happiness and conflict, provide insight to vulnerable populations and even potentially forecast global conflict in ways that allow us as a society to come together to deescalate tensions, counter extremism, and break down cultural barriers?
Put simply, the GDELT Project is a realtime open data global graph over human society as seen through the eyes of the world’s news media, reaching deeply into local events, reaction, discourse, and emotions of the most remote corners of the world in near-realtime and making all of this available as an open data firehose to enable research over human society. Global Reach GDELT monitors print, broadcast, and web news media in over languages from across every country in the world to keep continually updated on breaking developments anywhere on the planet.
Its historical archives stretch back to January 1, and update every 15 minutes. Through its ability to leverage the world’s collective news media , GDELT moves beyond the focus of the Western media towards a far more global perspective on what’s happening and how the world is feeling about it.

There are already tons of tutorials on how to make basic plots in matplotlib. Less is more The most important tip to learn here is that when it comes to plotting, less is more. Novice graphical designers often make the mistake of thinking that adding a cute semi-related picture to the background of a data visualization will make it more visually appealing. Yes, that graphic was an official release from the CDC. At the end of the day, data looks better naked.

Some visualizations are dazzlingly interactive; others are funny or clever. But when it comes to real-world business data, the stakes are high. Data visualization 1 In this example, the following figure shows a dashboard that analyzes the status of domestic loans in the United States. The original image can be viewed here. Things that work well: On the right is a single legend — Highlight Segment — that shows the legend for the color, which remains in both the bar chart at the bottom and the pie charts on the map.
The two large charts make digesting the data easy. The slider in the top-right corner controls the time period displayed on the charts. That interactive feature put users in control of what they view. The small pie charts that are overlaid on the map are of little value. The abundant use of red, blue, and orange are misleading, especially in the stacked bar chart at the bottom of the data viz.
This type of color usage harkens back to the recommendation about being careful with the use of RAG colors.
Data Is Beautiful
The only way to do that is to choose the right chart for your data. Creating the Right Charts The U. Government provides volumes of data to the public for absolutely free. One of the most valuable pieces of information for digging through cultural and social facts is the Census. This is a nice, small subset of data that allows for simple charting.
New data visualization uses US census to show that ‘JB’ is the most popular letter combination while ‘ZQ’ is extremely rare The initials JB were the most common from the US census.
But Wait, There’s More! I’ve written a couple other posts in this same spirit, with 17 additional tips. I’ll link to those posts and an article in Forbes in the last section. You’ll also find two examples below where I want you to play along. I’ll share the before version, and I want you to challenge yourself, create a better after version, and share it with me. I’ll add a couple of the best in each case below with your name and your permission. I’ve added a selection of eleven below to inspire you.
There are so many different, and simpler, way to solve the problem. In each case below, you’ll see a section called update, as is the case here, and that’s where you’ll find the wonderful submissions from our readers along with a after version I’d originally created. Some are from slides I saw at conferences, some from our company, and some from yours. In all cases, I’ve spent time changing company names or the names of the things on the slide so if you see Display Ads, that might be TV data.
I did not want to call anyone out, we all suck at this and we all need to get better together. I’m assuming for the rest of this post that either you are the person responsible for presenting the output of the analytical efforts OR you are working with a person who will present and that they are curious and will commit the time and intellectual horsepower required.

We are now making the content free and available to students who took the course and anyone else who is interested in learning how to create data visualizations to improve their reporting and storytelling. The course was taught by Alberto Cairo , He created and curated the content for the course, which includes video classes and tutorials, readings, exercises, and more. The course materials are broken up into four modules: Offers an introduction to visualization: It also reviews how to prepare data before visualizing it.
Covers how visualization can be used to explore and discover features that often hide behind data. The video tutorials will show you how to use software tools to import a data set and then visualize it in multiple ways to reveal patterns and exceptions to those patterns. Explains how visualization can be used to communicate with the public. The video tutorials show how to use the Google tool Flourish to design static and interactive maps and charts, and then put them together in sequential narratives.
Provides you with an exercise that will motivate you to apply what you learned from the course materials.

The archaeological site of Soyo, in the Darkhad Depression of northern Mongolia, has the potential to contribute significantly to understanding questions about the archaeological history of this region. Located at the intersection of the dense forest taiga and the grass steppe-land of the basin, Soyo is uniquely positioned to facilitate interaction between hunting and herding practices. Preliminary research at the Soyo site has revealed a unique depositional history where wind-blown sand has stratified thick artifact deposits creating a one of a kind, 7, year continuous record of human activity.
